Turning Passion into a Career
People often ask, “How did you get into a career in professional image, etiquette, and protocol?” My journey wasn’t a straightforward career path but an evolution of passion.
After a 16-year career in municipal and international sectors, I took a step back to reflect on what I genuinely wanted to do.
Discovering My Path to Image Consulting
I was drawn to fashion in high school, designing and creating my wardrobe. Legendary fashion designer Edith Head inspired my career dream. Initially, I pursued home economics and physical education in college, but something didn’t quite fit. Like many, I was searching for a career that felt natural and fulfilling. Then, I discovered image consulting—a field that perfectly blended my interests in fashion, personal development, and professional excellence.
My journey into image consulting began in 1980 as a Mary Kay Consultant, where I honed my skincare and makeup artistry skills. Around the same time, I became actively involved in YWCA programs, helping women shatter the glass ceiling with Dress for Success workshops emphasizing the power suit.
This path opened another door when I had a color analysis done and discovered that I was a Spring. The Spring Color Palette already existed in my wardrobe and explained why specific colors didn’t work for me—colors like taupe, which I never wore again after realizing it washed me out. This experience led me to work with Color Compliments, a company that provided color and line analysis influenced by Carol Jackson’s Color Me Beautiful. Eventually, I attended the Professional Image Institute, founded by Susan Bixler, where I received my certification—another pivotal moment in my career.
By 1985, I was ready to launch my image consulting business, specializing in dress-for-success workshops and seminars. The image industry was still in its infancy then, and I had the opportunity to grow alongside it, eventually founding You Are Unique.
Certifications and Continuous Learning
To stay ahead in this emerging industry, I pursued various certifications and enrolled in fashion studies at Madison Area Technical College. I also attended conventions like the American Federation of Image Consultants (AFIC) to stay current with industry trends. These experiences laid the foundation for my business, which evolved into Global Protocol, Inc., and later, Global Protocol Academy. Today, I offer training to others as subject matter experts in professional presence, etiquette, and protocol.
The Diverse World of Image Consulting
Image consulting has grown from a niche industry serving celebrities to a mainstream career option. With specializations ranging from color analysis and wardrobe development to personal public relations, having a well-rounded knowledge of the field is essential. However, focusing on areas that align with your passions and natural talents is equally crucial, as is partnering with other professionals in categories that don’t align with your strengths. By doing so, you enhance your service offerings and boost client satisfaction.
Recognizing the importance of being in the right mindset before acquiring new skills, I eventually added mindfulness management to my offerings. This was a breakthrough for me as I faced challenges in my career. Once I discovered how to use mindful tactics to overcome them, I researched and integrated this essential element into my services.
