The Words That Transformed
My Career
You are the only one that did not need to be here.
You just did not know it!
—Stan Gargani
Some words stay with us forever. They echo in our minds, shaping our decisions and redefining our paths. In 1981, these words from my Dale Carnegie instructor, Stan Gargani, marked a turning point in my career—one that led me to where I stand today. As you read my story, I encourage you to reflect on the words that have inspired and shaped your journey.
A Defining Career Moment
In a previous blog, I shared how I unknowingly broke through a corporate glass ceiling by persuading an international company to allow me to take their Dale Carnegie Course. This opportunity opened doors for other women as well.
At the end of the 13-week course, we gathered for a celebration dinner, where I anticipated receiving my certificate along with my peers. But when my instructor skipped my name, my heart sank. Then, Stan Gargani revealed the reason.
“You are the only one who did not need to be here. You just didn’t know it.”
Applause erupted around me, but I was confused. After dinner, Stan explained—his words altering the course of my future.
Discovering My Gift for Public Speaking
Public speaking is often ranked as one of life’s greatest fears, yet Stan saw in me what I had not yet recognized myself: a natural ability to engage and inspire an audience.
He urged me to embrace this talent and volunteer for speaking opportunities to refine my skills. While I still felt nervous speaking on unprepared topics, I found my confidence in subjects I was passionate about—fashion, interpersonal skills, and overcoming challenges. I thrived in audience interactions, and surprisingly, my spontaneous nature became one of my greatest strengths.
Turning Encouragement into Action
Following Stan’s advice, I started volunteering at the YWCA, developing and presenting Dress for Success programs. This experience aligned seamlessly with my corporate background and passion for fashion.
As I gained confidence, I began commentating at fashion shows for various fundraiser organizations and causes. Then came a pivotal challenge—a spring fundraiser fashion show where we needed to stand out.
I proposed an unconventional idea: inviting local television and radio personalities to model instead of the usual selections. Many doubted it would work, arguing that local celebrities wouldn’t participate. But I decided to ask anyway.
To my delight, every single one said yes. Not only did I serve as a commentator, but I also introduced each personality with a fun, engaging anecdote. It set a new standard for future events and reinforced my confidence in my abilities.
From Passion to Profession
Momentum built, and soon, I received my first corporate opportunity—a Dress for Success seminar for a local bank. The event was a success, and the bank president offered me a check for $100, encouraging me to start charging for my expertise. That check symbolized more than income—it validated my worth and ignited my entrepreneurial journey. I wish I had made a copy of that check and framed it!
From there, doors opened. I became a Petite Spokesperson for Filene’s of Boston and Prange’s department stores, and eventually, I expanded my expertise through business etiquette and protocol certifications.
The Power of Encouragement
Stan Gargani’s words did more than boost my confidence—they transformed my future. His encouragement helped me uncover my passion, refine my strengths, and step boldly into a career I love.
Looking back, I realize that a single sentence can change everything. The right words at the right moment can unlock untapped potential, ignite self-belief, and set someone on an entirely new path.
